NUMBER 2 ROCKY MOUNT, N. C, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2S, 1971 Major SGA Elections Set For October 30 Elections for Dorm Coun cil, the Senate, Primary Court and the Freshman Class will be held October 30. The Dorm Council nomina tions will begin this Tuesday, September 28, then elections will be held Thursday, Sep tember 30 in the dorms. A president and two dorm coun cil members will be elected. There will be two council mem bers elected for each floor. The Dorm Council is responsible for making sure excessive noise does not occur, litter and un sanitary conditions are taken care of, infraction of dormi tory rules, rowdiness and mis conduct is brought under con trol. The Senate is also electing members. Applications were due Thursday, September 23 for dorm and day students plan ning to run. Three Senators from each dorm will be elect ed, and two day students from the first one hundred and twen ty-five students and one for each sixty-five thereafter. The Senate establishes committees to investigate matters of con cern to the student body. Some committees are permanent, such as: the Constitution Com mittee, the Food Services Com mittee, the Grievance Com mittee, the Senate Rules Com mittee, the Finance Commis sion, and the School Spirit Com mittee. The Primary Court will elect five students on the 28th of September. One student will be elected from each dorm and one day student elected. The Pri mary Court will take care of minor infractions not covered by the Dorm Council, hear cas es involving occupants of more than one dorm, assist in the formation of dorm policy if need be and hear cases where pen alties imposed by Dorm Coun cils have been violated. The Freshman Class will al so be electing officers. A pre sident, vice-president, secre tary and treasurer. Applica tions for these offices are due October first and the elections will be held the fifteenth of October. Speeches may be giv en by the candidates the Tues day before election is held. Dr. Collins Releases 3 Track Curriculum DR. THOMAS A. COLLINS Orientation Chairman Completes Survey Dennis Hayek, co-chairman of the 1971 Orientation commit- Pi Epsilon Reopens NCW Day Care Center tee, has released the results of a freshman poll concerning Orientation. Approximately 75% of the Freshman Class respond ed to the survey, and the focus of their opinion was primarily on the social aspects of Orien tation. He states, “I recommend that we perfect a three track curriculum to of fer excellence in the Liberal Arts and Sciences along with a maximum of student initiative in achieving one’s educational ob jectives,” Dr. Collins also proposed that we abolish the system of semester hours and “designate a course as a (Continued On Page 2) Poetry Circuit Brings McCord On NCW Campus The Wesleyan Bruits, the campus literary organization, in co-operation with the poetry circuit will bring Howard Mc Cord to the Wesleyan campus on October 4, Having written nine books, Mr. McCord has traveled in many countries and Is director of the M.F.A. writ ing program at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. J Grilled cheese provides the daily fare for visitors to the day care center. In November of 1970, Pi Ep silon Sorority began planning a Day-Care Center for the children of Wesleyan Students, faculty, employees, and the Rocky Mount community. Sug gested by Mrs. Sarah Alexan der, the Center opened in Ja nuary- of this year as a free service for children from ages one to six. The Center is now open two days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The sorority re cently distributed questionnair es among the participating pa rents to determine their prefe rence between once a week for all-day service and twice aweek for four hour service each day. The questionnaires have been evaluated, and the outcome is in favor of two day service weekly. The sorority has yet to make the final vote, but ac cordingly to Marylee Weiss, Vice-President of Pi Epsilon, "Time conflicts will probably result in the Center operating twice a week,” The sorority wishes to move the Day-Care Center from the TV Lounge in the Student Union to the Infirmary. There, more convenient bathrooms, running water, and sleeping space would (Continued On Page 2) Dr. Joseph McPherson Appointed Librarian The newest member of our college staff is Dr, Joseph Mac- Pherson, newly appointed col lege librarian. Dr, MacPherson comes toWesleyan from George Peabody College, where he spent last year working towards completion of his masters’ de gree in library science. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Vanderbilt and has taught his tory for ten years. He also has a B.S. in business from George Peabody. In remarking on his new po sition, Dr. MacPherson states that his chief concern is to get more use of the library by the students and by the faculty. A- long these lines he is Interest ed in contact with students and says further that “sources need to be marketed.” In order to do this, MacPherson, is be ginning a program of booking exhibits for the library in cluding exhibits by the High lands Crafts Association, the French Embassy, and the North Carolina Arts Council. When asked about the hours the library is remaining open the semester, MacPherson em phasized that he has a small staff, ‘mostly family people with children” and he feels that they are working the ma ximum number of hours that he can ask of them.
